The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is set to appoint former South Africa coach Gordon Igesund as coach of their senior men’s national team, the Chipolopolo ahead of next month’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.
The Chipolopolo have been under the care of interim coach George Lwandamina but FAZ will now appoint Igesund to oversee their World Cup qualifying campaign.
South African Igesund, 60, is a highly respected coach in South Africa, having won the Premier Soccer League four times with four different clubs, but had a less than impressive time as coach of South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, but his contract was not renewed after it ran in 2014, following an underwhelming performance at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.
His last job was with Premier Soccer League side SuperSport United.
He is expected to lead the Zambians when they host the Super Eagles in Ndola on October 9, with Algeria and Cameroon also in the same group.
