Atletico Madrid continued their good form over Real Madrid in recent times with a 1-0 win in the Madrid derby played at the Santiago Bernabeu this afternoon.
France international Antoine Griezmann ended a run of five games without a goal with a neat finish to hand the away side a precious win as they make it six matches unbeaten against the Los Blancos and keep up pace with League leader Barcelona.
Zinedine Zidane’s men had the lion share of possession in the first half with 67% as against Atletico’s 33% but it was always Diego Simeone’s plan to play on the counter and try to soak up pressure from the home which played off.
The first real chance of the match fell to Real Madrid when German midfielder Toni Kroos picked out the head of defender Raphael Varane from a super free kick, but the centre-back’s header went over the crossbar. Cristiano Ronaldo fired in a right foot shot from 25 yards but it went harmlessly off target.
The Portuguese then produced a superb save from Jan Oblak in goal for Atletico Madrid and the rebound from Karim Benzema went off target. At the other end Griezmann found time and space outside the Real Madrid box, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Keylor Navas as the first half ended goalless.
Eight eights into the restart, the visitors took the lead as Filipe Luis and Griezmann exchanged passes before the Frenchman fired past Navasfor 1-0. Real Madrid pushed for the equalizer but Atletico held on for a previous victory that sees them firm up their second position on the La Liga log behind FC Barcelona.
