Paris Saint German forward Angel di Maria paid an emotional tribute to his late grandmother after helping Argentina to a 2-1 win over defending champions Chile at the ongoing Copa America Centenario.
The game which was played in Santa Clara, California witnessed the presence of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in the stands, seemingly casting his eye over Gonzalo Higuain, the in-demand Napoli striker.
However, without inspirational Captain Lionel Messi who was an unused substitute following his recovery from a back injury, Tata Martino’s men took a two goal lead in the second half courtesy goals from di Maria and Ever Benega but a late goal from Fuenzalida made it a nervy finish.
Di Maria who lost his grandmother recently, celebrated his goal with a t-shirt that had a message for the woman he loved dearly and said after the game with tears rolling down his face: “I wanted to play. It was a pride to my grandmother that I was in the national team.
“I knew I was going to have a chance to make a goal and I send a big hello to my family.”
Di Maria helped Paris Saint German to win a record fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title after joining from Manchester United last summer.
