Chelsea sign Portugal goalkeeper

Eduardo 2

Chelsea have completed the signing of goalkeeper Eduardo from Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb, according to Sky Sports.

The Blues had been on the trail of the Portugal goalkeeper as they sought to bolster their ranks, and have now secured his signature.

The 33-year-old played in Dinamo’s extra-time victory over Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday, which secured their place in the Champions League group stage.

He then bid farewell thereafter to Dinamo fans in an interview with the club’s official website, even though he failed to confirm if it was Chelsea he was joining.

“At the same time I am happy and sad,” Eduardo was quoted in the interview.

“This was a beautiful story, but I got a chance to go to a big club. It is the opportunity of lifetime and I think I deserve it.”

Eduardo won the Euros with Portugal earlier this summer, but didn’t get to feature as he was deputy to Rui Patricio, who was first choice goalie.

He is expected to fight for a place with Thibaut Courtois and Asmir Begovic for playing time at Chelsea.

Antonio Conte decided against retaining Marco Amelia this summer while youngster Jamal Blackman joined League Two side Wycombe Wanderers on loan last week.
