With captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele having left Mamelodi Sundowns for fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs, the club will soon select a new skipper.
The favourites for the role are Thabo Nthethe and Denis Onyango.
Brazilians’ media officer Thulani Thuswa spoke about coach Pitso Mosimane’s task to name a permanent captain.
“In fact, here at Sundowns we had three captains; Ramahlwe (Mphahlele), Nthethe (Thabo) and Onyango (Denis),” Thuswa told Vodacom Soccer.
“But since Ramahlwe has left, the coach [Pitso Mosimane] will then have to choose between Nthethe and Onyango.
“We don’t have a problem of team leadership here at Downs. Nthethe is currently the one carrying the team’s captain armband as Onyango is still serving suspension,” he added.
So, looking into that explanation, Onyango may be the first choice but there’s still time ahead of the new season.
For Sundowns next game during this SA “off-season” against Egyptian club Zamalek in the Caf Champions League on July 17, Nthethe is likely to wear the captain’s armband.
