Kenyans part of Somali history

Two Kenyan players grabbed headlines in Somalia as the Horn of Africa nation had its first ever local match aired live on TV when local rivals Heegan FC and Horseed FC faced off in the General Da’ud Cup final at the Banadir Stadium.

Former Gor Mahia striker Daniel Matengo and Robert Kareithi were in action as Horseed came from a goal gown to beat Heegan FC 2 – 1.

Kareithi was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons as he was sent off on the 34th minute of the game, two minutes after Horseed fell behind courtesy of Deeq Abdulahi’s goal.

Horseed did not give up and continued fighting and their approach paid off well on the fourth minute after the restart with Adaani Barre Isse getting the equalizer and Kenya striker, Matengo got the winner on the 60th minute.

The General Da’ud Cup is held annually in remembrance of the founder of Somalia’s Armed Forces, General Da’ud Abdulle Hersi. It has been played since 1972.
