Astana 1-1 Celtic: Ambrose puts in a solid show

Efe Ambrose was in action for 90 minutes as Celtic earned a 1-1 draw against Kazakhstan side Astana in Champions League third qualifying round first leg.

The Scottish Champions under the tutelage of former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers fell behind in the first half when Yuri Logvinenko headed the ball past Craig Gordon.

The visitors were out-classed as the home side kept possession and backed by their loud supporters.

Celtic had a shout for a penalty when Moussa Dembele was brought down inside the box but the referee waved play on to the dismay of the away bench and the player who protested angrily.

However, in the face of pressure Efe Ambrose helped the backline keep focus as they stayed solid and looked for a break at the other end.

With less than 15 minutes to the end of the match Leigh Griffiths curled Celtic’s only shot on target past Nenad Eric to level scores at 1-1 to the massive relief of Rodgers who now has the task of plotting a winning formula in the return leg.
