Valencia through to Copa del Rey semis

G. Neville

Valencia reached the Copa Del Rey semifinal after a 1-0 win over Las Palmas in the quarterfinal second leg to win 2-1 on aggregate.

Rodrigo Moreno was the hero for Gary Neville’s side as he scored just 20 minutes in when Alvaro Negredo’s pass released Andre Gomes down the right, whose cross was promptly converted by Moreno.

The win took some pressure of manager Gary Neville, who is yet to win in La Liga but the progress to the semifinal would have calmed some frayed nerves.

Valencia started the game well, and looked so much in control as they dominated proceedings for large spells but could easily have had a more difficult night if Aymen Abdennour had been penalized by the referee for what looked like a clear handball inside his 18-yeard box.

The Tunisian defender appeared to have handled the ball inside his own box, but it wasn’t spotted by the center referee, before Moreno went on to put them ahead.

The Mestella club could have scored a couple more before the break, but Las Palmas goalkeeper Raul Lizaoin was on hand to produce a fine fingertip save from Dani Parejo, before the resulting cornerkick was headed wide by Shkodran Mustafi.

Neville must be hoping they can get their first La Liga win under him this weekend.
