Croatia’s Darijo Srna vies with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo

The European Championship currently going on in France have produced some exciting moments for fans and while some stars shine brightly, few like Cristiano Ronaldo and Eden Hazard fell below expectations., Nigeria’s biggest football portal will highlight the flops and stars of the quarter final round as we kick-off the semifinal on Wednesday following through Thursday between Wales, Portugal and France, Germany respectively.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Real Madrid star came into the tournament with a big reputation and after making three semifinals in four previous Euros, Ronaldo was seen as the man to finally help Portugal win the competition after they failed to win win on home soil back in 2004 when they lost 1-0 in the final to Greece.

Portugal scaled through quarter final opponents Poland via penalties but apart from scoring his own penalty, the Three-time Ballon D’or winner didn’t do much in the game as 18-year-old Renato Sanchez was the hero.

Eden Hazard

Hazard wore the Captains arm-band for Belgium as Vincent Kompany was ruled out of the tournament due to injury but the Chelsea star failed to lead from the front as the Cup favourites fell like a pack of cards in the quarter-finals.

Belgium succumbed to a heavy 3-1 defeat to Wales and bowed out of the tournament in shame with Hazard struggling to find form when it was most needed.

Thibaut Courtois

The Chelsea keeper looked short on confident and a distance from his usual very assured self.

He was at fault for two out of the three goals and reports after the game suggested that he had complained bitterly to the manager about some underperforming teammate maybe that could have affected his concentration throughout that encounter.

Marouane Fellaini

Fellaini had a terrible tournament and committed more fouls in the quarter final match against Wales than cause a threat in the penalty area.

He made life easy for the Wales defender and it was no surprise that after conceding the first goal they came back and win 3-1.

Hannes Halldórsson

Going into the quarter final match against host France, Halldórsson had the best save ratio in the tournament and expectation were high on him to put in a good shift.

However, Iceland were torn apart and the Les Bleus powered five past the man who has a career as a film director when he is not playing football.

Renato Sanches

New Bayern Munich signing Renato Sanchez was the hero for Portugal in the quarter-final against Poland as his goal took the game into extra-time and then penalties.

He also scored his penalty during the shootout as Portugal sailed through to face Wales in the semifinal.

Rui Patrício

Pui Patrício is one of the longest serving members of the current Portuguese team and showed all his experience in the quarter-final win against Poland.

He saved the vital spot kick before Ricardo Quaresma scored the winning penalty.

Chris Gunter

Borussia Dortmund defender Gunter had one of the best games of a right back at the Euro 2016 as his runs and delivery a constant threat in the quarter final game against Belgium.

Infact it was his telling cross that Vokes converter for the all-important third gaol for Wales in the win.

Olivier Giroud

Giroud came alive as he netted twice in the 5-2 win against giant killers Iceland which followed his lovely assists to Antoine Griezmann in the round of 16 fixture.

The brace against Iceland made it three in the tournament for the Arsenal forward and he is a sure started in the semifinal clash against World Champions Germany.

Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba struggled to find his rhythm in the tournament and was benched in one of the group games but he firmly took charge of the quarter final match against Iceland as he controlled the midfield in the absence of the suspended N’Golo Kante.

Pogba helped himself to a goal and his performance on the night could easily have earned him a Man-of-the-Match award.
