10-man Akwa United team Thursday in Abuja got the better off reigning Nigeria League champions Enyimba to win the 2016 Charity Shield.
The loss for the Aba Elephants was the second in a row after losing by a lone goal to Vipers FC in their earlier outing in the CAF Champions League.
Though Enyimba and Akwa United failed to score in the regulation time, Coach Maurice Cooreman-tutored side carried the day as they finally defeated league champions Enyimba 4-3 in the ensuing penalty kicks.
Akwa United’s latest feat was achieved despite having to play with one-man less in Thursday’s game after the red card given to Yusuf Adio in the 65th minute.
With the victory in Abuja, Akwa United have successfully won three major trophies since November – the Federation Cup 2015, Super 4 and now the Charity Shield; which is the curtain-raiser for season.
While already proving their mettle on the domestic scene, the Akwa Ibom team who are one of Nigeria’s flag bearers in the CAF Confederation Cup are also not disappointing on the big stage having started out on a bright note with an away win in Pointe Noire, Congo last weekend
