Flying Eagles coach Emmanuel Amuneke has expressed delight at the 2-1 win over Burundi in an U20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday, but admitted it wasn’t an easy game.
The Nigerian U20 side progressed to the final qualifying round after a 3-1 aggregate win over the Yellow Swallows of Burundi.
The victory means they will face Sudan in the final qualifying round and Amuneke said it wasn’t east playing the Burundians.
“We thank God for the victory and that we have now qualified to face Sudan but it wasn’t an easy game,” he said.
“We played against a very good team and they showed character but the most important thing is that we got the win.”
Striker Victor Osimhen opened the scoring for the Flying Eagles in second half from the penalty spot, before captain Kelechi Nwakali’s free-kick appeared to have sealed the win for Nigeria.
The Burundians however pulled one back late on to give the Flying Eagles a scare, but they held till the end for the win which has now edged them closer to next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Zambia.
