France international Mathieu Debuchy has revealed that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger stopped him from joining Manchester United on loan in the last transfer window.
The full-back later signed for Ligue 1 side Bordeaux on a loan deal after the late approach from the Red Devils failed. He was also linked to Aston Villa during the winter window but never favoured a move to the relegation strugglers.
The emergence of Hector Bellerin coupled with a long time injury made it difficult for the former Newcastle United defender to break back into the Gunners first team and left him disappointed.
“Yes, at the end of the transfer window [United] came in,” Debuchy told Canal +.”They contacted my agents. I was disappointed, obviously. If I had the chance to go to Manchester United it would have been magnificent.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t the case. I discussed it with the coach too, who said that obviously he couldn’t help out a rival.
“Yes, I’m a little bit annoyed with him [for not playing me]. It’s his choice. I came back well this summer, I had a good pre-season. I was able to talk to him to know my future at Arsenal. He said that I would have game time and that we would discuss it in December.”
