The Argentine national team kept their status as the favorites in the Copa America tournament currently underway in the USA after beating Bolivia 3 – 0 on Wednesday 15 June at the Century Link Field in Seattle, Washington.
For the third straight game at the finals, Barcelona star Lionel Messi was named on the bench, Gerrardo Martino starting without the world’s best player despite his 30 – minute cameo against Panama in the second game where he scored a treble.
The decision to start him on the bench was perhaps informed by the fact that the diminutive forward still has injury worries picked from the preparations for the tournament.
Still it was all comfortable for Argentina, the finalists in the last edition.
All the three goals came in the first half, Tottenham Hotspurs star Erik Lamela opening the scores of the 13th minute before Ezequiel Lavezzi doubled matters two minutes later.
Lavezzi turned provider on the 32nd minute as Victor Cuesta completed the rout with the third goal.
By the time Messi came on for Gonzalo Higuain at the start of the second half, the job was well completed and Argentina will hope for another perfect run in the second round to address the heartache that has accompanied the team in the last two major tournaments – losing in the final in both the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America.
