The Ethiopia national team, Walias, one of the three nations from the CECAFA region taking part at the fourth edition of the African Nations Championships had a bad start to their tournament out in Huye, Rwanda, falling 0 – 3 to DR Congo.
Goals from Guy Lusadisu, Herritier Luvumbu and Meshack Ellia were enough to give Congo a powerful start to the 2016 campaign and will give them hope of reclaiming the title they won on the first edition of the tournament.
Ethiopia were undone by their inexperience with head coach Johannes Sahle opting to go for a young squad, most of the players having featured for the first time in the 2015 CECAFA Senior Challenge.
In the second match of the day, Cameroon had a man sent off but still held their own to see off Angola 1 – 0 in the other Group B match staged at the Huye Stadium.
Yazid Atouba scored the only goal of the game and Cameroon were reduced to ten men 22 minutes from time after left back Joseph Jonathan saw red for a dangerous tackle.
Atouba scored on the 21st minute with a sublime free kick from the edge of the box after he had been fouled. He bent the ball past the wall, giving goalkeeper Landu Mayanga no chance.
Cameroon stay second in the group behind DR Congo.
The teams will play their second matches at the tournament on Thursday, Angola taking on Ethiopia as DR Congo faces off with Cameroon.
