Amos Nondi netted from the spot to see Kenya U20 holds Sudan U20 to a 1 – 1 draw in the first round first leg of the 2017 Africa U20 Cup of Nations qualifier played on Sunday 3 April at Al Merreikh Stadium.
Hassan Motwakil scored the opener for the hosts on the 28th minute with a long range shot that beat the Kenya U20 keeper Timothy Odhiambo.
Zoo Kericho forward Nicholas Kipkurui missed by a whisker on the 32nd minute as his shot went wide after beating his marker and he missed a sitter two minutes later when put through by Ovella Ochieng who also had a chance on the 36th minute but Sudan goalie Ishag Adam came out in time to block his attempt.
Musa Masika’s cross at the stroke of halftime went begging and Kenya headed for the break trailing by a goal. Kenya resumed stronger and got the leveler on the 49th minute.
Ovella was brought down in the box resulting into a penalty that team skipper Nondi did well to dispatch successfully to the far left corner.
The return leg will be staged in Nairobi on Saturday 23 April with the aggregate winner playing Malawi in the second round.
