Manchester United defeated League One outfit Shrewsbury Town to book a place in the quarter final of the FA Cup.

The Red Devils had lost on Thursday night 2-1 to Danish side FC Midtjylland in the Europa Cup round of 32 and there was pressure on manager Louis van Gaal to lead the team to victory amid rumours of the arrival of Jose Mourinho to replace him.

The home side held on until few minutes to the end of the first half as Chris Smalling stabbed home a right foot shot from inside the box off a fine assist by Morgan Schneiderlin.

At the restart of the second half in-form winger Jesse Lingard extended the lead to two as he volleyed in a perfect cross from Spanish international Ander Herrera.

Shrewsbury could had reduced the deficit when Abu Ogogo found himself free inside the the six yard box but sent his headed wide – that was punished as Juan Mata curled in a sweet free kick to make it 3-0.

Youngster Will Keane came on for Anthony Martial but lasted just seven minutes on the pitch. He hit the post after four minutes of coming on and was replaced due to injury three minutes later as United finished the game with ten men.

Manvhester United will now face fellow premier league side West Ham United in the quarter final of the competition next month.
