Exclusive: Akwa United star warns against complacency

Akwa United midfielder Abdulafeez Awakan says his side is in top gear ahead of Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League encounter against Sunshine Stars in Akure but warns against any form of complacency following their recent successes in Cup games.

For Awakan and his team-mates, sustaining the tempo beyond the successes recorded in recent months is a feat that must be achieved, as the 2016 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season kicks off this weekend.

The euphoria of winning three trophies (the Federation Cup, Super 4 and the Charity Cup) within four months will definitely be a massive confidence booster for the Promise Keepers but Awakan says his side are focused on the job at hand and will not in anyway allow complacency to set in.

“It’s our first game of the season and that means we must start well irrespective of where we are playing. Home or away football is the same language and victory remains a possibility.

“The team have recorded successes in recent months all thanks to Almighty God but for me, I think those successes are in the past right now. Sunday’s game opens a new chapter to our history as a team and individual and I can confirm to you that we are looking ahead.

“We’ve worked hard in training and I think the several games we have played during the off season will help us in terms of competition fitness. Sunshine Stars will come out at us and we know their ability, all we need to do is stay focused and try to translate everything the coach has given to us in training on the field of play and see what happens after 90 minutes.” Awakan told 366football.com

Akwa United head into Sunday’s game against Sunshine Stars in the opening weekend of the 2015/16 NPFL season on the back of a 4-3 win over Champions Enyima on penalties last Wednesday at the National Stadium, Abuja which secured them Charity Cup.
