Mamelodi Sundowns are in the driving seat to win the Absa Premiership Q-Innovation Q3 award.
Having played seven (of eight) games in the third quarter of the league season, Sundowns have 19 points, while Kaizer Chiefs are in second place with 14 points, Platinum Stars third, also with 14 points.
While Chiefs and Stars have both played seven games, like Downs, fourth positioned Orlando Pirates have only played six matches in the third quarter.
With two games to play still, the Buccaneers can potentially catch Sundowns. But to do this, Pirates would have to score an avalanche of goals, as their goal difference is seven less than that of the Brazilians.
If Sundowns can take at least a point from March 16’s match against Bloemfontein Celtic at home, Pirates will be powerless to haul them in.
The Sea Robbers play Jomo Cosmos at home this Saturday, and Bidvest Wits away, next week.
Sundowns have already won the Q2 award and the R1.5 prize that comes with it. Bidvest Wits won the Q1 award.
