Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov claims that Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo will win the FIFA Ballon D’Or this year not because of his talents but because he is considered more handsome than others.
Ronaldo has had an average Euro 2016 tournament by his standards but his side is in the semifinals and will play Wales on Wednesday – Stoichkov feels that a player like Antoine Griezmann should get the accolade following an exception season for both club and country.
The Atletico Madrid forward scored 32 goals in all competitions as the club finished third on the La Liga log and lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final and has continued his good form as he is currently the top scorer at the Euro 2016.
However, just a week on from labelling Madrid’s James Rodriguez an “average player”, outspoken Bulgarian Stoichkov took aim at four-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo.
“Griezmann is blowing everyone away and playing some spectacular football,” Stoichkov told Spanish radio channel Cadena Cope.
“But they’ll probably give it to Cristiano Ronaldo again for being guapo [handsome]!”
The former Barcelona star once accused Ronaldo of being obssessed by Messi, he said: “Maybe the obsession with Lionel Messi is affecting him but I’m not inside his head. Messi motivates his teammates and, if Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t score, it affects his team.
“At times like that you have to display your personality; 99% of players can’t answer the question ‘why am I being booed?’ Messi is at the level of Pele, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff and what annoys Cristiano is that he is only compared to Messi.”
