The Kenya Women National Team, Harambee Starlets’ fine run at the ficth edition of the COTIF tournament in Spain was brought to an end after a 0 – 2 loss to Spanish side Real Betis in the semi final clash played on Wednesday 3 August.
The two sides had it all barren in the first half but Paula Moreno and Maria Bernal grabbed the goals in the second half to ensure Starlets’ good run that had seen them win their opening two matches come to an end.
Starlets went to the game on a strong footing from the opening results but lacked the incision they had in their first two games, approaching the match with too much caution and were made to pay in the second half.
Not even top scorer Esse Akida, who bagged five goals in the opening two matches would inspire the Kenyans.
The second half started well but not for Starlets as Betis got the breakthrough in 54th minute through Paula Moreno. Starlets tried to get a leveler but it only got worse for them as Betis extended their lead in the 67th minute through Maria Bernal.
Kenya will now play Espanyol in the third-place playoff match on 4 August, the Spaniards having lost to Venezuela in the earlier semi final.
