Gor Mahia defender Karim Nizigiyimana is just coming from a stellar season with the club, a season that saw him crowned the Defender of the Year in the Footballer of the Year Awards (FOYA), however, he cannot go back home in Burundi due to the civil unrest.
Burundi has been engulfed in violence in the recent past, which has seen Kenya Airways suspend flights to Bujumbura, leaving the defender stranded as he hopes to spend Christmas with his family.
He is worried of his people and family and speaking to 366football.com, he called on his fellow countrymen to exercise restraint and keep peace.
“The situation there is bad and airlines also do not want to fly to Burundi and it is a big disappointment. I hope to be traveling there soon but one thing I’d like to urge my people is that they maintain peace.
“My family and friends are there and I am worried at their safety; I can only hope things will get better,” he noted.
