Latest Shanghai Shenhua star, Nigeria’s Obafemi Martins has been pictured for the first time with the club jersey following his move to the Chinese Super League.
The 31 year old confirmed his exit from MLS side Seattle Sounders with an emotional message as he completed a deal that doubled his last earning according to the Chinese media.
“Official: Shanghai Greenland Shenhua’s have signed Obafemi Martins from Seattle Sounders,” It read with the picture of the Nigerian holding the jersey of his new Chinese team.
Martins joined Seattle Sounders in 2013 spent three successful seasons, scoring 43 goals in 83 matches across all competitions.
His most productive year with the club came in 2014, when he recorded 17 goals and 13 assists in 31 regular season appearances to help Seattle to their first Supporters’ Shield title and fourth US Open Cup crown. He finished second in that year’s MVP voting behind the LA Galaxy’s Robbie Keane.
The former Internazionale, Newcastle and Birmingham City striker, who had 15 goals and six assists in just 21 regular season appearances last year, worked his way back onto the Nigerian national team while with the Sounders, picking up a pair of caps at the tail end of 2015. He has 18 goals in 41 career international appearances.
Obafemi will have the company of Senegalese striker Demba Ba at the club who are currently in South Korea for their pre-season camping ahead of the March 4 resumption of the Chinese League.
