Following his surprise substitution in Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Las Palmas on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother has reacted to her son being to the development by telling her son to ‘Never lower your head’.
Ronaldo was taken off in what appears to be a tactical move, but the Portuguese was surprised to be substituted and his reaction after being taken off suggested he didn’t find it funny, as Real went on to concede a late equaliser to force a 2-2 draw.
The Portuguese was visibly unhappy as he trudged off the pitch and barely acknowledged coach Zinedine Zidane, prompting his mother Dolores Aveiro to tweet a picture of her son from Real’s bench, with the caption: ‘Never lower your head’.
Zidane has however insisted the decision was made with Tuesday’s Champions League group game against Borussia Dortmund in mind and not a reflection of his star player’s performance.
“I did not take Cristiano off because he was playing badly, but because we play another game on Tuesday and he has to rest,” Zidane said.
“He was playing well, like the others, but I had to think about Tuesday.
“We have a game on Tuesday and I thought it was the time to take him off, 20 minutes from the end, thinking about Tuesday,” added Zidane.
