Iceland pulled a result even they would not have anticipated in the 2016 Euro Championships, when they held a star studded Portugal side to a 1 – 1 draw on Tuesday 14 June.
However, as they celebrated the point earned, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was fuming and aimed a scathing attack at the minnows, terming their approach to the game a small mentality as they played a defensive game, and only targeting counter attacks.
Cristiano was frustrated after the match, saying Iceland did not play to win the game and in the end celebrated like they had won the title.
He termed it a lucky night for them as he insinuated they won’t go too far in the tournament.
“I thought they’d won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end, it was unbelievable. When they don’t try to play and just defend, defend, defend this, in my opinion, shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition.
“We just try our best, keep the ball all the time and Iceland didn’t try anything, they were just ‘defend, defend, defend’ and were playing on the counter attack. It was a lucky night for them. We should have three points but we are OK,” he said.
Ronaldo only shook one opponent’s hand as he walked off the pitch shaking his head.
