UEFA will be naming the best player in Europe for the past season in an event on Thursday 25 August and ahead of the event, Cristiano Ronaldo has termed his Real Madrid and Portugal team mate Pepe the best player at the Euro Championships in France.
Pepe inspired Portugal to beat hosts France in the Euro final after Ronaldo was stretchered off injured and after an extraordinary season that had also seen the two win the UEFA Champions League, Ronaldo feels the defender should have been duly feted.
The shortlist for the award has Ronaldo, his Real Madrid team mate Gareth Bale and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann but Ronaldo still feels Pepe had a great season deserving of an award bigger than being named in the Euros’ Team of the Tournament.
“In my book, Pepe was extraordinary this year. It was possibly his best season. He was undoubtedly Portugal’s best player and one of Real Madrid’s best players in the Champions League.
“I’m delighted he was selected in the Team of the Tournament at the Euros – in my opinion Pepe was the best player at the Euros,” he said.
