Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has termed 2016 his best year as a professional footballer, after helping both his club and country win major titles.
The forward bagged his third UEFA Champions League trophy after helping his team beat Atletico Madrid in the final in May then two months later won the European Championship with Portugal.
The Euro win was the first major trophy for Portugal and Ronaldo has termed it the best thing to ever happen to him.
“Probably, in terms of trophies, I can say yes. Every year since I started to play football has been amazing, but this year was special.
“It was the first time, it’s always special when you win something for the first time. I’ve won the Champions League three times but my dream was always to win something for Portugal, and that’s what we did,” he said.
Ronaldo’s start to the 2016/17 season has not been so good after starting it with a knee injury though he has been key for the team so far but he hopes they can repeat the magic, by winning a few major trophies yet again.
“We have a good team, we have a good coach. We have the experience of last year,” Ronaldo told World Soccer. “We know it’s a very tough competition, we need to be a little bit lucky but I’m looking forward to it.
“It’s a good challenge. For us, Real Madrid, as a team, and I think it will be possible to this year. I’m positive that we’re going to win it again.”
