After the loss to Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby on Saturday 27 February, Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted it will be very tough to win the league title.
The loss saw Real Madrid stay third on the log, four points behind Atletico and nine behind leaders Barcelona who play on Sunday and Ronaldo’s interview more or less stated that the team should just concentrate on the Champions League.
The Portuguese forward admits his team did not play like it should have and though going forward they won’t be giving up, he knows realistically the league is gone and feels sad for the fans.
“The explanation is that we lost, we didn’t play how we wanted to, we didn’t mark, and Atlético had one chance and scored it. We played better but we haven’t scored. We had more chances and we deserved to win. La Liga was difficult and it’s become more difficult. We’ve still got the Champions League and we’re not going to give up”
“We spoke in the changing room but that stays in there. When you lose it’s always difficult but we have to keep going, there’s a lot left. Zidane has given an optimistic message because he’s an optimistic person. He has given us confidence but it’s difficult losing at home against Atlético. We played better than them but they were lucky to get the chance and score”.
“The fans are unhappy and so are we. We always want to win, but it’s not always possible. If we win the Champions League at the end of the season the fans will change their opinion. I’m still excited because the Champions League is still possible, but La Liga isn’t,” he told the club’s website.
