Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘unguarded’ statement about Iceland after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw in the ongoing Euro Championships have been slammed by coach of the team Lars Largerback who was one time in charge of the Nigeria national team.
Lagerback told Ronaldo that he should not have expected an easy game against his team even though they were making a debut show at the ongoing Euro championships in France.
Iceland put up a resolute display as they held Portugal to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night but Ronaldo criticised the mentality of Iceland as they celebrated a point from their first fixture at a major tournament.
Lagerback on his part hit back; telling Ronaldo he needs to play better if he wants to beat his team.
‘That’s like it is in football,’ said the 67-year-old.
‘You can choose to play the football you like. It’s very common among players and coaches that if they are expecting to win, they always blame the opponent.
‘They have to play better if they want to beat Iceland, simple as that for me.’
Iceland will return to action this weekend when they face surprise group leaders Hungary on Saturday.
