Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero expects Lionel Messi to reverse La Albiceleste retirement following a bitter end to his national team career.
The forward who just turned 29-year-old announced minutes after Argentine’s 4-2 penalty defeat to Chile in the final of Copa America on Sunday that his international career is over.
Messi cried after the final whistle having blazed his own penalty over a bar in a shootout that ended which ensured a back-to-back win for Chile over Argentina in the Copa America final.
“I think he spoke in the heat of the moment because a beautiful opportunity escaped us,” Romero told reporters. “I can’t imagine a national team without Messi. I think he’ll reflect on it.”
Messi is Argentina’s leading goalscorer with 55 goals and five-time Ballon d’Or winner with 28 trophies with Barcelona but has lost four finals with his nation – his only major honour is a 2008 Olympic gold medal when he led the U-23 team to a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the final.
