There are indications that Roma youngster Sadiq Umar may be invited to fight for a shirt in Nigeria’s squad for the Rio Olympics men’s football event.
According to a report on Fcnaija.com, Umar among other things is been considered by Coach Samson Siasia to stand as a back up in the event that Flying Eagles assignments make Victor Osimhen unavailable for proper preparations with the Dream Team VI.
Osimhen who was the top scorer at the last FIFA U-17 World Cup is already in Abuja with the Flying Eagles ahead of this month’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burundi and Siasia is believed to have identified Roma striker Umar as back-up for the gangling forward.
Osimhen, who set an all-time FIFA U-17 World Cup scoring record with 10 goals last year in Chile, was in Siasia’s squad to the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal, from where they qualified for the Olympics.
The chance of playing in the Olympics may not be totally over for Osimhen since it will be in August. There is also the possibility of having Osimhen and Umar in the Olympics squad.
Umar has been in top form this season for Roma, scoring five goals for the senior side before coach Luciano Spalletti’s arrival at the Stadio Olimpico.
He later dropped from the pecking order of top strikers and was moved to Roma team B by Spalletti where he has scored 19 goals from 18 matches so far.
