Pretoria University are now just one point behind Jomo Cosmos in the Absa Premiership standings, following their 3-0 victory against Chippa United at the Tuks Stadium on Saturday.
Willem Mwedihanga established the lead for the home team, with a goal in the 34th minute.
Chippa United weren’t able to gather any significant momentum in the second half either and Pretoria University pounced on the opportunity. Thabo Mosadi added a second goal in the 60th minute, before Getaneh Kebede netted a third with 20 minutes to play, sealing an emphatic victory.
Cosmos, playing at Olen Park did have an opportunity to maintain their four-point cushion heading into the fixture against SuperSport United. However, a hat-trick from New Zealander Jeremy Brockie ruined any hopes of that objective being realised, as the visiting team walked away with a 4-2 victory.
Brockie established the lead for the visitors in the 17th minute, with Dove Wome adding a second before the half-time intermission. Brockie then added two more during the second stanza.
Cosmos did strike back with goals from Denver Mukamba and Mician Mhone but it was the proverbial case of too little too late. Matsatsantsa are tenth in the Absa Premiership standings, one point behind Free State Stars.
Orlando Pirates moved to within two points of Chippa United, when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. A solitary goal from Mpho Makola in the 47th minute was all that separated the two teams on the evening.
Golden Arrows consolidated their position among the top eight in the league standings, when they beat Platinum Stars 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium, in the only fixture played on Sunday.
The home team left it until late but ultimately collected maximum points, through a goal from Mwape Musonda in the 85th minute.
