Media reports from Spain suggest that Rafa Benitez will today be sacked by Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane appointed to step into his shoes.
According to Marca, a board meeting held on Monday at Santiago Bernabeu literally sealed Benitez’s fate as club officials said they were fed up with the string of poor results in recent weeks for Real.
Zidane, currently in charge of the club’s Castilla B team, and a former assistant to Benitez’s predecessor, Carlo Ancelotti, is named as the ex-Napoli trainer’s successor.
There are also reports that Benitez’s poor relations with a number of the players in the Madrid squad have also been a factor in the club deciding to make a change.
The former Liverpool and Chelsea boss has endured a tough season at the Bernabeu since taking over in June, and while he only finds his side four points off Atletico at the top of La Liga he has had fallouts with key players and been criticised for a defensive style of football.
An official announcement is expected later on Monday from Real Madrid
