Spanish giants Real Madrid whacked Villarreal 3 – 0 in the Spanish La Liga clash staged at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday 20 April to keep the pace with league leaders Barcelona and second placed Atletico Madrid.
It was never a perfect night for the home team who had to endure an injury to Cristiano Ronaldo as goals from Karim Benzema, Lucas Vasquez and a rare one from Luka Modric lifted the team.
Real manager Zinedine Zidane had a few changes in the team from the one that played Getafe on the weekend.
With Gareth Bale out with a minor injury, midfielders Lucas Vázquez and Casemiro returned to the side, while James and Isco took their respective seats on the bench. There was also a return for Danilo and Raphael Varane in place of Dani Carvajal and Pepe.
Though Real were fast starters, and were not troubled by the visitors’ attack, it was all too tough for them breaking down the yellow submarines defence.
The labor from Real would finally pay off on the 41st minute, with Benzema gladly heading home spills from Villarreal keeper Sergio Asenjo after a Ronaldo cross.
Villarreal resumed a more attacking side in the second half but their hopes were dashed on the 69th minute by Vasquez who shot from the right to beat Asenjo.
Vasquez then charged in from the right to cross for Modric who completed the rout for the hosts to keep them in third place on the table with 78 points, one point behind leaders Barcelona and second placed Atlético Madrid.
