Real Madrid, coming from a week of criticism and speculation over manager Rafa Benitez’s future at the team gave a strong statement of intent with an 10 – 2 thumping of Rayo Vallecano in a Madrid derby staged at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday 20 December.
Madrid started their business very early with a fantastic team goal on the third minute of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo breaking on the left before shifting inside to pick Toni Kroos who found Bale and the Welshman released Danilo who shot low past Yoel Rodriguez.
Rayo were not about to take the beating submissively; a tenth minute corner conceded by Sergio Ramos was met high by Antonio Amaya who outjumped Pepe to head home past a hapless Keylor Navas.
Just two minutes afterwards, Rayo took the lead through Sanchez Jozabed who had all the space to head home a cross from the right under Danilo’s watch.
Two minutes after taking the lead Rayo were reduced to ten men as Tito Roman was sent off for a rash tackle on Kroos and Danilo made amends for his error on the 25th minute when he skipped down the right and picked a pass from Luka Modric to cross to Gareth Bale who powered home with a header.
With scores level, Rayo suffered another major setback with Raul Baena getting his second booking of the day on the 28th minute after pulling Ramos by his shirt as they vied for a free kick.
Down to nine men against Real was almost a mission impossible and as Ronaldo stepped up to fire home the penalty, the script for Rayo was well written. Bale got his second of the day on 41 minutes to see Real head to the break with a 4 – 2 lead.
Madrid started the second half in more or less the same fashion they ended the first, Karim Benzema getting to the end of James Rodriuguez’s pass on 48 minutes to make it five.
Ronaldo made it six with a beautiful cutback from Roidriguez and Bale got his hat trick on 61 minutes after picking a pass from Ronaldo. His fourth came soon after; his pass to Ronaldo was blocked but it bounced back to him and had an easy tap in.
Benzema added two more, on the 79th and 90th minutes to complete his hat trick as Real beat their Madrid counterparts mercilessly.
