Karim Benzema had a scoring return for Real Madrid as he combined well with another returnee Cristiano Ronaldo to ensure the Spanish giants register their 11th straight win in La Liga beating Valencia 3 – 2 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday 8 May.
Gareth Bale, who had been the star for Real Madrid in the recent matches was missing in action as well as keeper Kaylor Navas but they were not missed as Real Madrid started fast with both Benzema and Ronaldo missing after fine team moves.
Valencia’s luck however ran out soon after with Ronaldo getting to the end of Marcelo’s assista after a fine team move to give Real Madrid the lead on the 26th minute and Karim Benzema doubled the hosts’ lead on the 42nd minute, taking advantage of a poor defensive play by the visitors tto ensure Real took a comfortable 2 – 0 lead to the break.
Valencia resumed a more energized side and Parejo should have halved Real’s advantage but had a shot hit the bar from a direct free kick. That was just a precursor as on the 55th minute Rodrigo cut the hosts lead following a rebound after Andre Gomes’ cross.
The celebration lasted just four minutes as Ronaldo netted the third to restore Real Madrid’s two – goal cushion after picking James Rodriguez’s pass.
Andre Gomes cut Real Madrid’s lead on the 81st minute after a corner swung in by Parejo but their quest to restore parity was dented by the 83rd minute red card shown to Rodrigo.
The win saw Real Madrid rise to second place following Atletico Madrid’s loss to Levante and will go to the final weekend of action hoping to overtake Barcelona to win the title after Barca whacked Espanyol 5 – 0.
