Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has emerged as a serious doubt for the team’s UEFA Champions League faceoff with arch rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday 28 May after suffering a muscle injury.
As reported on the club website, Varane suffered the muscle problem during training and is facing a race in time for the European showpiece in San Siro, Milan.
The injury also puts Varane’s hopes of representing France at the Euro 2016 in doubt, with the host nation getting their campaign underway on June 10. A statement on the Madrid website read:
“After tests carried out today on the player Raphael Varane he has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 injury in the left thigh muscle. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”
Varane has made 33 appearances in all competitions for Madrid this season.
