Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic has been ruled out of Sunday’s La Liga week 11 fixture against Villarreal at the Camp Nou and may face a late fitness battle to be ready for the trip to the Bernabeu.
Rakitic was injured in the first half of the Champions League game on Wednesday at Camp Nou against BATE Borisov. He was replaced by Munir in the 20th minute after picking up the calf problem.
A statement by the club on Thursday confirmed the unavailability of Rakitic for the visit of the Yellow Submarines. He is also considered doubtful for this season’s first Classico on November 21.
“The Croatian has a small tear in his right calf which he picked up in the first half against BATE Borisov.
“The tests carried out by the FC Barcelona medical staff confirm that Ivan Rakitic has a small tear in his right calf.
“The player will miss the game against Villarreal and his recovery will dictate his availability for the following matches.” The statement read.
Barcelona are not having any luck at all this season with regards to injuries in the Champions League. In the first game in Group E Rafinha picked up a serious knee injury in the Stadio Olimpico against Roma.
Iniesta suffered a hamstring problem that kept him out for a month. Then just two weeks ago Sergi Roberto injured himself in the game in Borisov against BATE, an injury from which he is now completely recovered.
