Dream Team VI midfielder Saliu Popoola has revealed exclusively to FCNaija that his petit size is not a disadvantage as he loves playing against bigger players.
The 21-year-old who is an absolute fan favourite in Brazil because of his 1.70m height was cheered with every touch he made at the Rio 2016 Olympic Men’s Football event.
The ovation for the Metz midfielder was however loudest during the semifinal match against Germany where the noise were almost deafening but Nigeria went on to lose that game 2-0 to the disappointment of Sao Paulo fans who wanted the West Africans to play hosts Brazil in the final.
Asked how he felt being the smallest player on the pitch, he replied: “It makes me very happy because it is easier for me to play against bigger players,” he told FCNaija.
“It is hard for the big lads to get the ball off me and because am close to the ground helps me get faster so it’s an advantage for me rather than a disadvantage.”
Popoola was in action as Nigeria defeated Honduras 3-2 to win the Olympic Bronze at the Estadio MineiraoBelo Horizonte on Saturday.
