First-half goals helped SuperSport United defeat Platinum Stars 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday afternoon.
Matsatsantsa moved up to seventh on the Absa Premiership standings following their victory, while Dikwena remained third on the league table.
Dikwena should have grabbed an early lead when Tlou Segolela was set through on goal seven minutes into the game, but the speedy winger sent his effort wide of the target.
However, in the 16th minute the visitors broke the deadlock through Mario Booysen who headed home Dove Wome’s cross from the left to make it 1-0 to SuperSport.
Stars nearly responded with a goal five minutes later when Siyabonga Zulu pushed forward and played a good cross for Isaac Nhlapo who headed the ball just over the crossbar.
It was soon 2-0 to SuperSport when Bradley Grobler’s beautiful cross found Kingston Nkhatha inside the Stars box, and the forward headed past Dikwena goalkeeper Kagiso Mlambo in the 28th minute.
Stars head coach Cavin Johnson responded by pulling out ineffective midfielder Ryan De Jongh for centre forward Eleazar Rodgers eight minutes later.
Matsatsantsa were leading 2-0 during the halftime break courtesy of two great headers from Booysen and Nkhatha.
Former Orlando Pirates winger Segolela forced SuperSport shot-stopper Ronwen Williams into a comfortable save seven minutes after the restart with a shot from range.
In the 64th minute, Nkhatha missed a sitter after rounding Stars keeper Mlambo and somehow the former Kaizer Chiefs striker placed his effort wide of the target.
Mlambo denied SuperSport striker Grober seven minutes later after the former Dikwena striker had turned and unleashed a shot which was well-saved by the shot-stopper.
Ultimately, SuperSport held onto their lead and they walked away 2-0 winners on the day.
