Portugal defender Pepe was a key man for his team as they lifted their first major international title after beating hosts France to lift the Euro 2016 title on Sunday 10 July at Stade de France.
The Real Madrid defender had watched in agony as his team mate Cristiano Ronaldo was stretchered off after 25 minutes following a bad foul by Dimitri Payet and he says they put up a performance to win it for him.
Spesking after the win, Pepe said it was tough losing their key man in the team but resolved to fight on as soldiers in a game he admits was intense and came with a lot of suffering.
“It was tough to lose our main man, the man who could at any moment score a goal. We said we would win it for him and we managed to do that,” said Pepe.
“He could make the difference but we were warriors on the pitch,” added the defender, who is a team-mate of Ronaldo at Real Madrid. “There was a lot of suffering, it was a very intense game.”
Pepe and Ronaldo have now won both the club and national team European championships.
