Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil has beaten Chile’s Alexis Sanchez and Spain’s Hector Bellerin to the Arsenal Vitality Player of the Season award as voted by the club fans.
In second place is Alexis Sanchez. The Chile international produced some outstanding displays in 2015/16, scoring 17 times in all competitions while Hector Bellerin who picked up where he left off in 2015 and was an ever-present in Arsène Wenger’s side came in in third place.
The Germany international has had a fabulous campaign, breaking records, scoring goals and laying on assist after assist.
When Arsène Wenger predicted in pre-season that Mesut Ozil would be a contender for Player of the Year, he once again displayed the prescience that has served him so well throughout his career.
For not only did the Germany international fulfil his manager’s lofty expectations of him, but he also confirmed the view of many that he is the world’s premier playmaker.
Ozil made the sort of start to the season that spoke of a man with a point to prove – and the superlatives were soon flowing as quickly as the goals the 27-year-old was laying on for his team-mates.
As the Gunners racked up the wins, their talismanic playmaker was at the heart of everything – claiming three successive Player of the Month awards and breaking a Premier League record with assists in seven consecutive games.
Few will forget his performance in the 3-0 defeat of Manchester United in early October, nor his outstanding contribution during a golden period that took in victories against Bayern Munich, Everton and Swansea City as the Gunners moved to the top of the table.
