Being in the relegation zone Maritzburg United dominated this game, but Orlando Pirates snuffed them out.
Still, Bucs won’t be satisfied with a stalemate against a lowly team. After seven minutes Evans Rusike missed the target for Maritzburg when he had a good chance.
Then eight minutes later Brighton Mhlongo stopped Kurt Lentijes. It took until the half hour mark for the home side to make an impression, this time with Thamsanqa Gabuza but Virgil Vries stopped him.
In form forward Tendai Ndoro unleashed a cracking free kick just before half-time but the team’s went into the break goalless.
Away captain Lentjies was taken off with an injury and Sheldon Van Wyk replaced him.
The real exciting action came in the final ten minutes as United were looking likely to score, but the Buccaneers actually had a clear penalty shout waved away by referee Robert Smith when Onyango went through Luvuyo Memela from behind and didn’t win the ball.
In the end neither side could score, and the result means Pirates are looking over their shoulders for the top eight while Maritzburg are level on 21 points with University of Pretoria, both four points behind Jomo Cosmos with two games to play.
