Ogenyi Onazi is set to be knocked off of Nigeria’s squad to the Olympic Games on ‘technical grounds’ after officials discovered he is slightly over-aged, fcnaija can confirm.
Onazi, 23, was included in the original provisional list of players for the games, albeit as one of the players within the age bracket but he is set to be struck off the list as officials realized he is over-aged by only seven days.

The eligibility rule for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games states that only players born on or after 1 January 1993 are within the under-23 age bracket, while players born before are over-aged. And while he is only over-aged by seven days, given that he was born on December 25, 1992, he can only be taken to the Games as one of the three over-aged players.
As a result, he is expected to be removed from the list as he is not in contention to go to the Games as one of the over-aged players for Nigeria with John Obi Mikel and Odion Ighalo already listed.
It remains unclear who will replace Onazi on the list, but CSKA Moscow forward Ahmed Musa has been mentioned as a possible candidate.
The football event of the Olympics runs from 4 August through the 20th and Nigeria are in group B, with Sweden Colombia and Japan.
