The Kenya national team is set to take on Uganda in a friendly match and Zambia in an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier slated for later in the month and early September and a provisional squad of 40 players has been called up by head coach Stanley Okumbi.
The most notable inclusions in the team is the England based duo of defender Josh Lenan who plies his trade with Plymouth Argyle FC and striker Jonah Ayunga of Brighton & Hove Albion.
There is also a surprise in the call up handed to AFC Leopards youngster Jack Bruno, who has started in just two of the league giants’ matches.
In the provisional squad there is also a place for defender David Ochieng, who plays for New York Cosmos in the US. Ochieng last featured for Harambee Stars in December 2015 as he skippered the team at the CECAFA Senior Challenge in Ethiopia.
Spanish based Ismail Gonzalez is also in the team after an impressive turn on his first call up when he featured against Tanzania, Sudan in friendly matches then against Congo in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers.
Eugene Mukangula who has been in great form for Thika United in the recent weeks is also in the team as is Western Stima FC’s Kenneth Muguna and Zoo Kericho FC Mike Madoya.
Peter Nzuki and Nicholas Mejja from second tier side Nakumatt FC are also named in the squad while Eric Johanna who is in Sweden for trials has a place in the squad.
The usual suspects are all therein, led by skipper Victor Wanyama, Zesco United FC trio of David Owino, Anthony Akumu and Jesse Were, Gor Mahia FC’s Boniface Oluoch, Sweden based Michael Olunga and Maritzburg United’s Brian Mandela.
The locally based players called up will report to camp on Monday 15 August while their foreign based counterparts will report a few days to the first match.
