Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has reportedly landed a multi million dollar deal which will see him dump Seattle Sounders for a move to China to join big spenders, Shanghai Shenhua.
The report about Martins move is being reported by the BBC eventhough neither Seattle Sounders and Shanghai Shenhua are yet to announce the move.
Last season, Martins who was voted Sounders MVP netted 15 goals for Seattle in the MLS.
The much-traveled striker was recently linked with struggling English Premier League side Aston Villa.
He has also played for Inter Milan (Italy), Newcastle, Birmingham City (England), Rubin Kazan (Russia), Wolfsburg (Germany) and Levante (Spain).
Several top African stars like Asamoah Gyan of Ghana and Gervinho of Cote d’Ivoire have cashed in on lucrative offers coming from China.
It is also understood that Shanghai Shenhua are still willing to splash more cash to bring in Demba Ba and Fredy Guarin. Avraam Papadopoulos and former New York Red Bulls DP Tim Cahill are on the wish list.
Since joining from Levante, Martins has been dominant in his three years with the Sounders. He scored 40 goals with 23 assists in his 72 regular season games here.
Shanghai will be Obafemi’s eighth professional team.
