Ikorodu United ended their 11 games streak without a win with a 3-1 thumping of Heartland FC at Agege Stadium earlier on Saturday as city rivals MFM FC extended their unbeaten run at home with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Akwa United later in the day in a NPFL match day 14 fixture.
Olatunbosun Sikiru opened scoring at Agege stadium after benefiting from a side footed pass from Onuaha to hand MFM the lead at half time. After the break, Stephen Odeh increased his season’s tally to five with MFM’s second of the night after nodding home from close range.
Olatunbosun’s second on the night inside the final seven minutes secured the Olukoya Boys a comfortable 3-0 victory to move into third spot on the NPFL table.
Ikorodu were pegged back by the Naze Millionaires for most part of the first half and the visitor’s possession was rewarded 10 minutes after kickoff when Anthony Oussou headed the visitors ahead after a flowing move.
The home side struggled to stop the flowing play of the visitors and what would have been Heartlands’s second goal was wasted by Bright Ejike who nodded over the bar from close range. Merenini Junior’s brought the home side back on level after beating goalkeeper Philip Acho for 1-1 in added time.
The equalizer sparked the game into life as a more confident Ikorodu United team made sure Heartland’s attack on their goal was reduced to long range efforts. In the 66th minute, Ebiye put the home team ahead against the run of play.
Any hope of a fight back by the men from Owerri was dashed after Zoumana Doumbia received a red card for his foul on Ebiye in the box. Ojukwu Ifegwu stepped up to score with seven minutes left on the clock.
The result however does not reflect on Ikorodu’s position on the NPFL log as they are still four points behind 19 placed Enyimba while Heartland who are currently 11 on the log will most likely be displaced by either of Sunshine Stars, Plateau United or El-kanemi Warriors who all play on Sunday.
