The opening day of the National First Division season saw wins for AmaTuks, Mthatha Bucks, Santos and Thanda Royal Zulu, while the KZN derby was drawn.
University of Pretoria 2-1 Cape Town All Stars
AmaTuks drew first blood after 17 minutes, Thabo Moseki firing in a scorching shot. The Cape side threw more numbers forwards in the second half and had their equaliser when Bongani Fakude scored after a scramble in the box. The Tshwane team struck the winner seven minutes from time when Chemon Petersen took advantage of a mistake in the Stars defence.
Royal Eagles 1-1 Real Kings
Siphamandla Gumede netted Kings’ first goal in the NFD, while Raymond Monama netted for Eagles.
Santos FC 2-1 Mbombela United
The Peoples’ Team were ahead after five minutes when Tyren Arendse’s shot deflected in off Vincent Shongwe. Mbombela levelled matters five minutes later through Sibongiseni Madikane. The Cape side got a late winner when some excellent work from Arendse resulted in a goal for debutant
Mthatha Bucks 3-1 Stellenbosch FC
It took Bucks just eight minutes to find the net, Lwazi Mncube converting from the penalty spot after Philani Dlamini’s cross was ruled to have been hand-balled. Despite a late consolation goal for the visitors, two goals from Andile Njokweni in the final 15 minutes of the game sealed a perfect start to the season for coach Velile Dyaloyi’s side.
Magesi FC 1-2 Thanda Royal Zulu
The NFD rookies took an early first half lead through a well executed header by Noah Maimela. Thanda’s equaliser came a few minuets after half time, Cele levelling for the KZN outfit. Thanda got their winner four minutes from time when Innocent Maela scores from a goal mouth scramble.
