Media reports say sacked Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez is set to be appointed the new manager of Newcastle understand.
The former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is said to be in advanced talks with the Premier League club to take over by the end of the week.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Benitez is in line to replace Steve McClaren, who will be sacked in the wake of a catastrophic run of results that has left the club second from bottom of the Premier League.
The Newcastle board have held off from sacking McClaren while they source a suitable replacement.
The top brass at St James’ Park, led by managing director Lee Charnley, are now confident they have that man in Benitez, who has been out of work since being sacked by Real in January.
Steve McClaren is at Darsley Park to take training once again. It’s claimed that the pre-Leicester City press conference scheduled for today has been postponed and the the current head Coach will now meet with Charnley today.
Rafa Benitez has been linked with the club. Spanish media figures have speculated that a three year deal is looming and the three main titles claim it’s now imminent – with demands over the level of power he would enjoy met, including the installation of his backroom team.
Whether that three year deal includes a relegation clause this summer remains to be seen though.
The Mail claim that the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager will meet with Newcastle United officials on Thursday, speculating that he could be in charge on Monday at Leicester.
