Manuel Neuer will not be in goal when Germany takes on Italy in a high-profile friendly international on Tuesday owing to a stomach bug.
The German football federation said late on Monday that Neuer has been sent home after consultations with team doctors.
The federation did not say who will replace Neuer, who turned 30 on Sunday.
Neuer who has 64 caps for the national team will hope to have recovered in time for Bayern’s Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, with the Bavarians five points clear of closest rivals Borussia Dortmund at the summit.
Meanwhile, coach Joachim Loew will be making a decision on who replaces Neuer from among the three goalkeepers in the squad; they are rookies Bernd Leno and Kevin Trapp, plus Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona, who has four caps.
The run to the Italy game is not so good for Germany as stand-in captain Sami Khedira, who plays for Juventus, also missed Monday’s training and underwent a recovery session in the team’s hotel.
Germany were beaten 2-3 over the weekend and they are keen to redeem themselves against the Azzurris.
