The excitement is building as the Nedbank Cup last 32 kicks off tonight, with two matches on Wednesday, two on Friday, and a further 10 on the weekend.
In addition, there are two further encounters taking place next week Tuesday.
Wednesday night’s action involves three NFD clubs, with Maritzburg United the only representative from the Absa Premiership in action on the day.
The Team of Choice, bottom of the PSL standings, will be looking for some respite from their league troubles when they host Kosta Papic’s Black Leopards at the Harry Gwala Stadium, Leopards currently ninth in the NFD.
Down in Cape Town, Santos host Mthatha Bucks at the Athlone Stadium in an all-NFD affair. Bucks beat Santos 2-1 in an earlier league game this season at Athlone, the two clubs also due to meet in the league next week. The Peoples’ Team are currently 10th on the NFD table, Bucks 15th, six points separating the sides. Both these matches kick off at 19H30.
Moving on to Friday, where three of the four teams in action involve Absa Premiership teams. There is an all-Absa Premiership encounter in Johannesburg, where title hopefuls Bidvest Wits face a Bloemfontein Celtic side battling for form this year.
In the second game, rookie outfit Steenberg United from the third tier, a team containing ex top flight stars such as Marawaan Bantam and Thembinkosi Fanteni, will be hoping for a giant killing act when they host a Platinum Stars team currently flying high in the Absa Premiership in fifth spot. Both games on Friday start at 20H00.
Saturday’s focus for many will be at the FNB Stadium (15H00), where Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs once more do battle in the country’s most loved and most watched derby encounter.
Ajax Cape Town also play against PSL rivals, the Urban Warriors hoping for a better result than usual against bogey side Free State Stars, who beat the men from the Cape in the league last week.
Lower league sides EC Bees FC and Magesi FC meanwhile will both be eyeing progression to the last 16 when they clash in East London, while Milford FC and Polokwane City Rovers will be daring to dream when they take on Golden Arrows and AmaTuks respectively.
Sunday’s action sees Polokwane City, Chippa United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Black Aces all stepping into the relative unknown against lower league opposition, while third division side Sibanye Golden Stars face on-form NFD club Mbombela United.
Sundowns have a potentially tricky encounter away to a Highlands Park side that has been outstanding in the NFD this season, while Chippa face First Division log leaders Baroka FC, who will be fancying their chances of an upset.
Polokwane City meanwhile will be hopeful of getting the job done when they host African All Stars at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Next Tuesday’s matches see SuperSport United hosting Moroka Swallows, while Jomo Cosmos welcome former NFD giants AmaZulu.
Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers stores nationwide. Except one fixture, tickets for the last round of 32 fixtures will be R40 for adults and R10 for children under the age of 12. For the Soweto Derby fixture featuring Orlando Pirates against Kaizer Chiefs (Saturday afternoon, 05 March 2016), ticket prices will sell between R100 (level 1 and 2), R80 (level 3) and R15 for children under the age of 12.
